When new that Sunny Hill was making a comeback hit k-pop news sites, it seemed that just about every site framed it as their return following their reorganization into a girl group. Of course, to Hillers, as Sunny Hill fans are termed, this was akin to blasphemy. Sunny Hill could not be a girl group because they it still had a male member, Jang Hyun. Sure, he had left the group at the end of January in order to complete his mandatory military group, but even absent, he was still considered a member of the group.

This classification is problematic for a different reason, specifically in their use of the  of the term ‘girl group’ in regards to Sunny Hill. In the realm of pop music, and in k-pop especially, the term ‘girl group’ carries a very specific connotation, conjuring up groups like SNSD, KARA, and T-ara. Yet Sunny Hill does not fit comfortably with these groups, as they have proven more than once through their songs and music videos that they are a different breed of idol.

Sunny Hill seems to be aware of the mismatch between their newfound ‘girl group’ status and the nature of the songs they sing, as they more than once make reference to it in their latest video for their song, “Is the White Horse Coming?”. While the primary meaning of the song and video is indeed commenting on the propensity of people to choose a mate based on more superficial criteria, there seems to be a secondary meaning. Just as it is a video full of commentary on superficiality, it is also a send-up of the stereotypical girl group. While there are a number of veiled references being made, but for the sake of brevity, this post will cover three: their dance, the depiction of the female body, and the role of Kota as the anti-maknae.
